Natural Beaded Extensions 101: an Exclusive FAQ with Las Vegas Hair Artist, Jessica Tidwell

After five years without hair extensions I decided to take the plunge into the world of hair extensions again. It is incredible how much things have changed and advanced since the last time I had hair extensions. It feels SO GOOD to have long voluminous hair, and today Las Vegas hair artist Jessica Tidwell is joining me to answer all of your hair extensions in a fun Natural Beaded Extensions 101 post!

Before we get into the Q&A, here are a few reasons I absolutely love my hair extensions:

  • This method is extremely flexible. I can easily wear my hair up or down. I’ve noticed with other hair extension methods that it can be extremely hard to hide the extensions when I put my hair up.
  • They aren’t bulky at all! I can wear all of my favorite hats. (With beaded wefts I needed an entirely different hat size.)
  • My curls last a few days. There’s nothing like waking up to perfectly curled hair in the mornings! I will sometimes touch up a few pieces here and there, but overall I wake up with my hair ready to go.
  • There’s just something about long hair! I already have a lot of hair, so I personally do hair extensions for the length. It’s so fun to have a change.

How long does the hair last?

Hand tied hair lasts on average 4-8 months with proper care.  At home maintenance is the most important to extend the life of your extensions. Using good moisturizing/hydrating products and using minimal heat will extend the life of your hair.

What method do you do and why?

I am currently using the NBR method.  I have liked this method the best so far because of the way it is placed and the comfort of the method. With that being said there are new methods coming out constantly and I am always trying them out to see if anything can be improved.  It is my job to make sure I am staying up to date and current on the best that is out there.

Will it damage my hair?

The truth is everything damages our hair: brushing, blowdrying, curling and even touching our hair repeatedly. The key to have the least damage possible is for the points of contact to be evenly distributed and the least amount of contact with your hair.  The NBR method has between 8-12 points of contact on a row which makes the opportunity for damage minimal.  If extensions are installed properly and taken care of properly, damage is very very little.  I have seen a ton of hair growth on my clients who have had previous damage from other extension methods, bleach or not properly taking care of their hair.  Extensions can also help your hair grow because you usually are styling it less and not having to bleach/color as much because you can add in your desired colors through the extension hair.

How long does my hair need to be?

For the most seamless look your shortest layer needs to be to your chin and the length needs to be to your shoulders.

Price?

Your first install is going to be between $1000-$2000 depending on the length and how many rows we decide to do depending on your desired outcome.

Maintenance appointments range from $300-$600.  This depends on if we refresh your color or just do a move up of the extensions.

How long does the process take to get them in?

With color: approximately 4-5 hours

Without: approximately 2-3 hours

How often do I get them moved up?

Move ups are every 6-8 weeks.

Favorite styling tools for long hair

My favorite curling iron is the Bio Ionic long barrel. I also like the deep wavers for a different look.

Tips to take the best care of hair extensions

Wash your hair 1-2 times a week, let your hair air dry for at least an hour before blowdrying, don’t tug or pull on your extension hair, use moisturizing products and a heat protectant before using hot tools, sleep with your hair in a loose ponytail or braid, brush gently and enjoy your beautiful hair!

What is the typical cost of adding pieces to the front for fullness (not length)

If you want to just add hair in the front for fullness you will likely just need 1 row and the cost is around $1000 for your first install.

Nervous that the extension color won’t be a perfect match.

Everything is custom colored along with your hair to guarantee a perfect match between your hair and the extension hair.

How often do they need to be moved up with the method you do?

Every 6-8 weeks and I am currently using the NBR method using hand tied hair.

What products do you recommend for hair extensions?

I have really liked K pak with K pak color luster lock deep conditioner.  Their leave in conditioner is amazing and they all smell amazing.

Least recommended hair extension method/most damaging method:

Tape ins or individuals that are connected to your hair throughout your entire head.  To remove tape in extensions you have to use alcohol which can dry your hair out.  Individual extensions are connected to the majority of your hair which can cause damage to the hair that it is connected to.

To apply NBR extensions I use beads and string. To remove them all I have to do is open the bead and cut the string.  Removal is fast and easy!

I always debate extensions but I’m not sure I’m ready for the commitment:

If you are not ready to commit to extensions the Halo is a great option.  With the Halo you can put it on and take it off whenever you want.  It is great for special occasions, pictures, or daily wear.  Bring on the confidence in less than 5 minutes!
