Outdoor Family Picture Tips

Happy New Year from our family to yours! The kids and I spent the night eating sushi, watching the ball drop (New York time) and watching the Las Vegas Strip fireworks from afar on our balcony. It ended up being a fun night despite my husband working! I thought today would be the perfect day to share our family pictures that we took for our Holiday cards this year along with some outdoor family picture tips!

Bring a brush, lip gloss, and a foundation brush. Typically we take photos in November, and the cold windy weather can make my nose look red. A quick touch up can make a huge difference. Half way through your photos

Try to create contrast with the background. If you’re in a desert setting and everyone is in tan, everything will blend in.

If you’re debating, get the spray tan!

Don’t do anything crazy to your makeup. A lot of people want to have their makeup done professionally for family pictures and end up not feeling like themselves. I did this during our engagement pictures and I’ve always regretted it! Unless you have a makeup artist who you already know you love, I wouldn’t do it.

Bring treats for the kids, and/or incentives to taking pictures such as printing off their favorite picture for their room after.

Have something fun to celebrate family pictures once you’re done. This year we went out to one of our favorite restaurants since we were all dressed up! It was something to look forward to and a fun way to end the day.

Make sure everyone (including yourself!) has individual photos taken. Trust me!

Buy more than you think you need. Options make everything go smoothly, and you can always return the items that didn’t workout later on.

Bring in as much texture to the outfits as you can ie. sequins, velvet, lace, leather, cableknit, etc.

Fake eyelashes will make your eyes pop and look much better than clumpy mascara. (Make sure you feel comfortable applying prior to your picture day to prevent frustration and timing issues.)

Lay out all outfits next to each other to make sure everything flows.

When planning, have someone take a quick picture on your phone from different angles to make sure you like how your outfit photographs. Some of my favorite outfits photograph terribly so I save them for times when I’m not being photographed! (For example, many things from Free People are extremely unflattering in photos.)

It’s always good to have some photo inspiration going into your pictures. Some photographers are better than others at posing the family and keeping things moving. Others are pretty silent in front of the camera which is a personal pet peeve of mine after having worked with many photographers. I prefer someone who is full of ideas and constantly positioning and coaching us through! It never hurts to have some ideas in your mind incase you happen to not have much direction. (And to be clear, I don’t have this issue with the people I currently work with!)

Choose a location that your photographer is familiar with rather than a new location, and request sunset.
