It can be easy in the warmer months to stay motivated, but it gets a little bit trickier once Fall rolls around. There are so many temptations and so many less swimsuits to be worn this time of year. So how do we stay motivated as a family to be fit and healthy? Today I’m excited to share a few tried and true tips and tricks with you!
Friendly Competition
First and foremost, something that I love about Brett and I is that we are competitive! We both wear Fitbits regularly and love to try to beat each other in total steps each day. There’s nothing like a little friendly competition to motivate you to be a little more active throughout the day. It really makes it so much easier to stay fit when you have someone with the same goals in mind. When we’re on the same page health and fitness wise, it is so much easier to stay on track. I recently started using the Fitbit Charge 3 to track my steps! It is my third Fitbit (yes, I’m a huge huge fan!) and I have to say it’s my favorite so far.
The One Hour a Day Rule
I set a goal for myself to be active for at least 1 hour straight per day. Sometimes I spend it at the gym, other times I spend it walking or running with the kids to the park. Every day is different, but meeting that one hour mark makes me feel so much better the rest of the day. Some times my one hour at the gym will be an extremely intense workout while other times I won’t break much of a sweat, and that’s okay. It’s all about balance.
Set goals
On top of the one hour a day rule, it is important to set short term daily goals in order to reach your bigger long term goals. I have a standard goal set on my Fitbit Charge 3 to take at least 10,000 steps per day. I am such a goal person that funny enough, I have even found myself walking in circles at my house if I haven’t quite met my goal at the end of the day.
Aside from setting fitness goals, I think setting personal goals throughout the day makes such a big difference too. If I wake up with all of my intentions set for the day, I have a much more active day all around. Sometimes I find that if I start my day off too slow, the rest of my day feels a little sluggish.
Simple Substitutions
Making simple lifestyle substitutions can make a big difference in the long run! Try to be conscious about things like switching out whole milk for almond milk, choosing stairs over an elevator, or even holding your baby for a quick run into the store rather than using a stroller. If you’re set on having a treat at the end of the day, we will start off by sharing an apple and almond butter together. If we’re still hungry after that, we will each have a few bites of ice-cream together. If we don’t have that apple before hand, we would devour the entire pint of ice cream!
Get creative with the Kids
One of my favorite things to do is to find fun ways to work out with the kids. I will do bench presses with Michael like this, and he giggles the entire time! I will also do things like put Paige on my shoulders and do squats, or hold her in my arms and do lunges. It keeps them happy and keeps me active. Michael loves to copy what we do, so we will teach him how to do certain things like squats, push ups, and jump roping. He loves to feel involved in our workouts, and it really helps us get through our workouts while still entertaining him.
Fun tools such as the Fitbit charge 3 and Fitbit Versa Ruby make it easy and fun to stay active. My Fitbit Charge 3 allows me to get a deeper understanding of my body, my health and my progress. Not only does it count steps, but it is swim proof and tracks 24/7 heart rate, calorie burn, 15+ exercises, goal progress, sleep and more, allowing me to improve myself and reach my goals. There really is a product out there for everyone Have you heard of the FitBit Versa Ruby? It is a new modern, intuitive smartwatch at an approachable price. The Versa Ruby is the lightest metal smartwatch in the U.S. market, and simplifies how you access your health and fitness data.
